Making music together for over two decades, Brazilian guitarist Celso Salim and California harmonica player Darryl Carriere present their first record in collaboration.
“BBQ,” the first video from Celso Salim and Darryl Carriere’s new album, About Time, is not about one of America’s favorite food groups. Rather, it’s about not being dragged over the coals by your significant other and having your love life move to a better place. “It’s a relationship song,” says Salim. “Darryl wrote the lyrics and I wrote the music.”
Brazilian-born guitarist/vocalist Salim and California harp player/singer Carriere have been musical co-conspirators going back to the late 1990s, yet About Time is the first album they’ve released together. “I wrote the lyrics for “BBQ” almost 20 years ago,” Carriere notes. “It was inspired by the understanding that sometimes conflict is where the healing is in a relationship. Comparing the fire in a relationship to the fire of a barbecue grill and striving for that perfect slow burn, like the type of burn that comes with a magic sunset.”
The song is undeniably upbeat, with its fire coming from a boogie-driven hook fueled by dueling guitar and harmonica over an unrelenting engine room that packs a heavyweight punch while solos from the bandleaders send it all over the top. While it might not be about meat on the grill, it’s more than enough to make you hungry for more.
